G37 Glock - Glock's effort to provide a powerful handgun with an excellent ergonomic fit for most shooters has resulted in the Glock 37.
Introduced in 2003, the Glock 37 was the first caliber the Austrian gunmaker developed in conjunction with the .45 Glock auto pistol. Designed as a more compact alternative to the legendary .45 ACP round, the .45 GAP replicates its performance while allowing for smaller magazines and handgun grips.

Glock's original Glock 17 pistol arrived in the United States in the mid-1980s. Considered the prototypical "Wonder Nines," the Glock 17 was a combination of a lightweight polymer frame, a steel slide, and a seventeen-round nine-millimeter magazine. Although the Glock 17 was very popular, concerns about the lack of power in the nine-millimeter round kept .45 ACP owners from jumping on the bandwagon. Glock reached out to .45 ACP enthusiasts in 1990 with the first non-nine-millimeter Glock, the Glock 21. Shooters with firearms with the latest handgun technology (admittedly not the .45 ACP pistol) with powerful cartridges.

The Glock 21 was a great pistol, but there was one problem: the double-stack ammunition scheme used in the Glock 17 and now the Glock 21 created a handgun with a wide grip that wasn't ideal for shooters with smaller hands. This could be a problem with local law enforcement across the United States, which Glock saw as a barrier to community acceptance and essentially free advertising. Racial and gender diverse police departments may prefer the narrow grip .45 Glock.
While the .45 ACP's recoil is often overestimated and can be controlled, a narrower grip will give shooters with smaller hands more confidence as they can wrap their fingers and palm around the weapon. The narrow, single-stack 1911A1 handgun invented by John Moses Browning, although bulky and relatively heavy, has a grip narrow enough that anyone can maintain comfortable and positive control of the weapon.
Glock partnered with ammunition developer and manufacturer Speer/ATK to develop a compact version of the .45 ACP round. The result is that the overall length of the .45 GAP (Glock Auto Pistol) is 27.2 mm – as opposed to 32.4 mm. This makes the new .45 GAP round nine millimeters shorter than the Parabellum, with an overall length of 29.69 millimeters. This translates into narrow magazines: the Glock 21 has a magazine width of 1.15 inches, while the Glock 37, developed to take advantage of the Glock .45 GAP, was .904 inches wide. Since magazine size dictates grip size, the .45 GAP allowed the Glock 37's grip to be half an inch wider than the Glock 21's.
Glock and Speer/ATK developed new rounds using the latest metal and propellant technology. Both companies needed to reproduce the performance of the .45 ACP round in a smaller cartridge, which meant more to do with less internal casing volume. It also means using a propellant that creates an internal pressure greater than the 19,000 psi of the .45 ACP. The use of the new propellant increased the pressure of the .45 GAP to 23,000 psi. The result is a new caliber similar to the .45 ACP: According to Ballistics101.com, the Federal Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) round in the .45 ACP produces 404 foot-pounds of energy at 890 feet per second. The Federal FMJ in .45 GAP produces 395 foot-pounds of energy at 880 feet per second.

Glock's co-development of the .45 GAP round resulted in a .45 caliber handgun that was similar to the Glock 17 while packing the power of the Glock 21. Thanks to the Glock 37, those with smaller hands don't have to sacrifice round performance to find a pistol that fits them.
